Freda lives with her mother, sister and little brother in a popular neighbourhood of Haiti. The little street shop, owned by Freda’s mother and worked by Freda and her sister, helps them survive and begin to realise their plans for a better life, a life free from precarity and daily violence. Freda’s younger sister whitens her skin and straightens her hair in pursuit of wealthy men, while Freda’s family’s efforts go towards supporting her younger brother’s emigration from Haiti. We see in Freda, that a better life means aspiring for upward class mobility in Haiti or leaving Haiti for better opportunities. Freda’s values and beliefs mean that neither of these are preferable options for her even at the expense of romantic love.
